Charles Manson

Charles Manson sits in a jail cell today and will for the rest of his life for being responsible as a murderer. Growing up in Ohio, Charles was traded from place to place, and as much as he ran back home to his alcoholic mother, she always rejected him. A familiar face to early days of prison, he was often charged for car theft, larceny and the prostitution of underaged girls. During most of his jail time, Charles was taught guitar by a fellow inmate. When released, he moved to San Francisco where he fell in love with a librarian, lived in her home and invited eighteen other women to stay there too. Together they all traveled the west coast in an original hippie bus and became known as the Manson family.

While traveling, a few of the Manson family ladies went hitchhiking and Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys drove them back to his Pacific Palisades home. Charles appeared on the property with the rest of his Manson followers, acted as servants and stayed at Dennis Wilson’s for the next few months, costing him over a hundred thousand dollars. Often Charles played his guitar and jammed, making impressions on music business friends that welcomed him into the recording studio to create an album. Dennis enjoyed one of the songs cease to exist so much, that he rewrote it for the 1969 Beach Boys album 20/20 and was awarded a gold record.

Charles Manson established his own headquarters on two ranches in California’s Death Valley from his music connections. He became obsessed with the Beatles “White Album”, declaring their writing was the complete soul of his operation because he felt the meaning was about the danger of black & white social turmoil. Inspired to name his home, the yellow submarine and as the Manson family waited for their delusional apocalypse, Helter Skelter; Charles felt he was being directed by the Beatles to make even better music and spent most of his time writing songs.

Excited about what he was creating, Charles arranged for producer Terry Melcher to visit and hear his work, but instead terry never arrived. Outraged, Charles travelled to Melcher’s old residence which by that time unknowingly belonged to Hollywood’s Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski. While on their property, Charles got into an altercation with a friend of Tate’s and went back to death valley, told his Manson family that it was time to destroy everything surrounding them. After his followers joined together and cascaded inside a gruesome bloody chaos, Charles was convicted of the whole conspiracy. Recorded in 1968 and not released until after his imprisonment in 1970, Lie: the Love and Terror Cult was shared in hopes of funding Charles Manson’s legal defense.
